Oh what a party!
Following the Cheltenham game, Crewe ASi held our End of
Season (not quite) Party and Awards night! Although unavailable for selection
against Cheltenham due to tonsillitis, Nick Powell joined us in time to pick up
his awards for Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season and Goal of the
Season (vs Gillingham, away, 10th March 2012). Not content with
that, Nick also picked up the Sandbach Travelling Alex accolade, and along with
fellow England starlets Max Clayton and Ben Garratt a rather unique memento of
their selection for England U-18’s presented by Dario Gradi!
With the fantastic result against Cheltenham and moving
into seventh place ahead of the difficult trip to Torquay, everyone arrived in
party mood to be entertained by Les Gibson, The Blueprint Blues Brothers and
Sounds Disco.
We were also delighted to be joined by ’97 play-off
heroes Shaun Smith and Steve Macauley, who were both visibly moved to be presented
with the John Fleet Memorial Award for services to Crewe Alexandra by John’s
widow Mandy!
This particular presentation was delayed as we awaited
the arrival of Fleetwood Town’s First Team Coach who had spent several hours at
Cambridge’ Addenbrooke’s Hospital following a serious facial injury to one of
his players.
Following the main awards, an auction of unique Alex
and football memorabilia was held by host Graham McGarry on behalf of Steve
Phillip’s Immy Shimmy appeal.
At the start of this appeal, Steve was hoping to raise
£1,000. At the start of the auction he was hoping we might pass the £5,000
mark, with over £3,000 having been raised from the ASi race night and Whitby
Morrison’s Ice Cream “give away.” Thirty minutes later, the £7,000 barrier was
broken, as among other items, Nick Powell’s England shirt went for £500! Steve
is truly blown away by everyone’s generosity. Thank you!
This may have been the official party, but no doubt
there’s more to come!
