The going was good

Well it’s Grand National week-end, and what do you think of? – Cracking horse races with close finishes, electric atmosphere, and a chance to win lots of money (writes Ade Dobson).  Well you don’t need to travel to Liverpool for all that because you could have attended the annual Crewe ASi race night. Once again a sell out crowd had a great time, being whipped up into a frenzy by our resident compere - Tommo.

TommoCompere

Eight sponsored races all being screamed home by the audience, but at the same time as trying to win money, everyone attending was raising money for our current designated charity, Hope House.  Horses had been named by paying punters prior to the event, and so it was that we had horses lining up with the dubious names of Hoof Hearted, 3 Legged Friend, Stud Muffin etc etc. Programmes, sponsored by Concorde Trophies, were available on the night giving you full information on what was happening, together with a full list of runners and riders.

Did it really matter that the horse you backed was so slow and so late getting home, it had to tiptoe into the stable, because Hope House were being helped out by your contribution, and boy did I help out as none of my sure fire certainties came anywhere near winning.  In fact in one race, my horse was so slow, I am sure I saw the jockey keeping a diary of the trip. In fact one of my horses was so good it took seven horses to beat it.

Not only did you get to watch eight races, but also there was a lucky programme raffle on the night, party games and free food.  A wonderful site to behold as Tommo had people putting their hands on their heads or their behinds and somebody won £40 by doing it – you had to be there to understand it!!

A truly excellent evening’s entertainment.  But unfortunately there is always sad news at this time of year especially with the perils of the fences at Aintree, and it is with a hard heart that we have to report on a sad horse story which hasn’t yet hit the newspapers.  David Beckham had decided to go horse riding. Although he had no previous experience he skillfully mounted the horse and appeared in complete command of the situation as the horse galloped along at a steady pace, with Victoria admiringly watching her husband. After a short time David became a little casual and began to lose his grip in the saddle, panic set in and he grabbed the horse round the neck shouting for it to stop. Victoria started to scream and shout for someone to help her husband as David had by this time slipped completely out of the saddle and was only being saved from hitting the ground by the fact that he still had a grip on the horse's neck. Becks decided that his best chance was to leap away from the horse, but his foot had become entangled in one of the stirrups. As the horse galloped along David's head was banging on the ground and he was slipping into unconsciousness. Victoria was now frantic and screamed and screamed for help!! Hearing her screams, the Tesco Security Guard came out of the store and unplugged the horse – Panic Over!!!

Seven races down and I was determined to win a race, and it eventually looked odds on that I could bask in winning glory, as my horse was well ahead of the field. Suddenly it appeared that it was hit on the head by a turkey and a string of sausages. The jockey  managed to keep control of his mount and pulled back into the lead, only to be struck by a box of Christmas crackers and a dozen mince pies as it went over the last fence. With great skill the rider managed to steer the horse to the front of the field once more when, on the run in, it was struck on the head by a bottle of sherry and a Christmas pudding. thus distracted, it only came in second .  I couldn’t believe it, another loser due to my horse being seriously hampered

On a final point anyone who was there cannot fail to have been moved by the speech at the end of the evening by a parent whose child is helped by Hope House, emphasizing how much work they do and how much they need contributions from us all.  Taking that into consideration, did it really matter that your horse lost, and your 50p was going to help out Hope House – Definitely NO.  They do a lot of great work, and it is a pleasure to help them out in a small way.
